Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was British prime minister from 1940-1945 and again between 1951 and 1955. He is best remembered for successfully leading Britain through World War Two. He was famous for his inspiring speeches, and for his refusal to give in, even when things were going badly. Many people consider him the greatest Briton of all time and he's almost certainly the most famous British prime minister.
Churchill's stirring oratory is perhaps his greatest legacy. His wartime speeches famously gave the British lion its roar during the darkest days of the Second World War.
Churchill's ability to mobilize, inspire, cajole, intimidate, and lead his own people is unique in the annals of history. Keeping a defeated army and country afloat for almost two years and forging a broad and strong alliance with both the United States and Soviet Union was quite a feat. Given his conservative convictions, his ability to work both with the American democrats and the Russian bolsheviks shall remain in history.
Churchill's speeches were a great inspiration to the embattled British in World War II. His first as prime minister was the famous, "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat" speech. One historian has called its effect on Parliament as "electrifying". The House of Commons that had ignored him during the 1930s "was now listening, and cheering". Churchill followed that closely with two other equally famous ones, given just before the Battle of Britain.
